Where to Stay On The Gold Coast For First-Timers

December 15, 2025 | By

I lived on the Gold Coast for over 2 years and absolutely loved it. I was lucky to call Burleigh home, and every day felt like a holiday.

I’ve since moved to Brisbane, but I spend most weekends down on the coast. My partner, Gary, is always keen for a surf, my toddler loves the beach, and I won’t say no to a weekend away.

We often book a hotel near the beach so we’re only a short walk away from the water. And over the past few months, we’ve stayed in a few different areas depending on price and availability.

Burleigh and Miami will always be my favourites, but if we’re treating ourselves to something a bit more bougie, Broadbeach is our go-to. It’s also the best place to stay on the Gold Coast if you’re a first-time visitor or travelling with kids.

In this guide, I’m sharing the best areas to stay on the Gold Coast based on my personal experience as a local (and tourist). Happy planning!

Best areas to stay on the Gold Coast

Broadbeach | My top pick for first-timers and families. I love the beach here, plenty of restaurants, and close to the theme parks.

Burleigh Heads | Local vibes with a beautiful beach and popular surf spot. Don’t miss Burleigh Hill sunsets and picnics.

Surfers Paradise | Nightlife and clubbing. Plenty of shops but a bit chaotic for my liking.

Miami | Fewer crowds, stunning beach, and coastal walk. Local atmosphere and not touristy.

Main Beach | Closest area to Sea World and other theme parks. Not as busy as Broadbeach and surfers. I recently stayed here and it was incredible!

Tallebudgera & Palm Beach | Great for families with small kids. Calm swimming at Tallebudgera Creek, easy walk to Burleigh Heads.

Kirra | Long stretch of beach, close to Snapper Rocks, quieter than Coolangatta, and minutes from the airport.

Broadbeach

If it’s your first time visiting the Gold Coast, stay in Broadbeach. It suits everyone – families, couples, solo travellers, and anyone wanting a central, convenient base.

Broadbeach sits right in the heart of the Coast, so you can easily visit all the other areas without sitting in too much traffic. It’s essentially taken over from Surfers Paradise as the main place to be, but without the chaos.

What I love about Broadbeach is the balance:

  • Great food options: from relaxed brunch spots to some of the best restaurants on the Gold Coast.
  • An easy night out: Surfers Paradise is just a quick tram ride away if you want nightlife.
  • Close to major attractions: you’re not far from theme parks like Wet’n’Wild and Movie World, which makes it ideal for families.
  • Shopping: Pacific Fair is right there (one of Queensland’s best shopping centres).

Getting around is simple, too. You can take the light rail (tram) straight to Surfers Paradise. And by the end of 2026, the tram line will extend from Broadbeach to Burleigh on the southern end of the Gold Coast.

Where to stay in Broadbeach

We’ve had friends stay at The Langham, which is on the beachfront. Highly recommend if you’re after something luxurious with ocean views. This 5* hotel comes with all the bells and whistles, but if you’re looking for a self catering option, they offer self-container apartments too.

This means you can enjoy all the perks of The Langham (gorgeous pool, swim up bar, jacuzzi) but at a more affordable price point. These rooms are part of The Jewel Residence (which is attached to the Langham). Check availability here.

Burleigh Heads

Burleigh will forever hold a soft spot in my heart. I visited Burleigh Beach almost daily when I lived here, and I loved the relaxed vibe.

Yes, it’s much busier than it used to be, especially on weekends. But Burleigh still feels like a local neighborhood at its core. Accommodation here is mostly apartment-style, which is perfect for families or anyone staying a few nights or more.

The dining scene is one of the best on the Gold Coast with rooftop bars, beachfront cafés, and small local restaurants tucked away down side streets.

Some of my favourite things to do in Burleigh Heads include:

  • Sitting on Burleigh Hill for sunset, watching the surfers.
  • Walking the Burleigh Headland National Park track.
  • Grabbing a picnic dinner and finding a grassy spot overlooking the ocean.

The location of Burleigh Palms Holiday Apartments could not be better! It’s just across the road from Burleigh Beach and you’re also a short walk from the main restaurant area (meaning you can walk everywhere, instead of fighting for parking).

Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise was once the hotspot – and internationally, it still has that recognition. But unless you’re here to party, I wouldn’t recommend staying in Surfers. It’s the most crowded part of the Gold Coast and feels pretty sleazy.

When family members visit from overseas, they automatically associate the Gold Coast with Surfers Paradise. But I reckon I’ve done a good job at showing them that the Gold Coast is so more than just Surfers Paradise.

However, it’s still worth checking out if you have the time. But for accommodation? There are many better places to stay on the Gold Coast.

Miami

Just south of Broadbeach are Mermaid Beach and Miami. These are two of the most underrated areas to stay on the Gold Coast.

They feel much more local and low-key, and you won’t find big resorts here. Instead, there’s a great range of apartment-style stays and boutique hotels.

Miami Beach is one of our go-to’s when Burleigh is packed. It’s quieter, has a fun beach break that Gary loves, and I enjoy the coastal walk from Miami to Burleigh. Plus, Miami Marketta is just up the road – perfect for a casual night out with live music and street-food vibes.

Where to stay in Miami

The Shores is a boutique hotel that’s become a popular place to stay in Miami. While the area has more apartment syle accommodation, this is a great choice if you’re after hotel vibes.

Main Beach

Main Beach is right next to Surfers Paradise – but it’s not nearly as chaotic as it’s neighbour. It’s close to Sea World (you can stay at Sea World Resort) and other theme parks too.

The area is made up of mostly apartment style accommodation and I was pleasantly surprised with the restaurant strip. It felt classy and upmarket, yet relaxed and unpretentious.

Where to stay at Main Beach

I only discovered this area after a friend recommended I stay at The Sheraton Grand Mirage. The resort sits alongside the beach, and the swim-up bar is what sold me on booking a stay here.

Overall, I prefer the vibe of Burleigh/Miami/Broadbeach, but if you’re looking for luxury resort-style accommodation that’s family-friendly, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Sheraton on Main Beach. You can read my detailed review here.

Tallebudgera & Palm Beach

Just south of Burleigh, you’ll find Tallebudgera and Palm Beach. The vibe here is super relaxed, but Burleigh is a five-minute drive away if you want more restaurants or bars.

Tallebudgera Creek is one of the best swimming spots for kids. It’s calm, shallow in parts, and the water is the softest shade of blue on a sunny day. You have both the beach and the creek within walking distance, which is perfect if you’re travelling with little ones.

The area stretching from Tallebudgera to Palm Beach has grown a lot in recent years, yet most tourists still overlook it in favour of the bigger-name spots like Broadbeach and Burleigh.

Where to stay in Tallebudgera

If you stay at Sea Mist Palms, you literally cannot get any closer to Tallebudgera Creek. While the apartments are a bit outdated, they’re perfect for families.

Another great option is Crystal Pacific Beach House. This stylish two bedder is on the beach side, between Palm Beach and Tallebudgera Creek.

Kirra

Kirra is another one of those areas on the Gold Coast that tourists tend to overlook, but it’s such a gem. It’s a great alternative to Coolangatta, which can get a lot busier.

The beach is stunning and far less crowded than the central suburbs, and you’re right next to Snapper Rocks – home to one of the world’s best waves.

The only downside is distance. It can take a while to get up to the northern end of the Gold Coast and theme parks with traffic. But if your trip is more about quiet beaches, coastal walks, good coffee, and a slower pace, Kirra is perfect.

It’s also incredibly convenient if you’re flying in, because the Gold Coast Airport is just minutes away – yet the area still feels calm and removed from the airport buzz.

Where to stay in Kirra

We stayed at La Costa Beachside Hotel, which is only a 5 minute walk from the beach. It’s simple motel-style accommodation with a relaxed atmosphere.

For ocean views, check out Iconic Kirra Beach Resort which offers gorgeous oceanfront apartments.

Where to stay on the Gold Coast

Now that you know all the different places to stay on the Gold Coast, it’s time to choose what’s best for you.

First time visiting? Stay in Broadbeach – The Langham and Jewel Residences are an excellent option. It might be more built up than the other areas on the Gold Coast, but the beach here is beautiful and the central location makes it ideal for visiting theme parks and other suburbs.
