But the peaceful surroundings, large sites and fire pits make it a worthwhile visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was in search of a much-needed escape from the city, so I headed to Mill Creek Campground for a weekend getaway. It\u2019s 80 km north of Sydney and lies on the edge of the Hawkesbury River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a scenic, 2-hour drive. Unlike other campsites in NSW (which are booked out months &#8211; even years &#8211; in advance), I found that Mill Creek isn\u2019t as popular so you\u2019ll often find an open site for the days you select.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was very impressed with the layout of the campground, and the sites are a lot bigger than I thought they would be. Bring your own drinking water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open fires are permitted, and you need to bring your own firewood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While the sites are big, the maximum number of people per site is 6<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only a select number of sites have fire pits. So if you\u2019re planning on making a fire, be sure to book a site with a firepit (or bring your own one)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All sites are unpowered<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mill Creek Campground is suitable for tents, caravans, and motorhomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are electric BBQ facilities available<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mosquitos thrive in this area so bring insect repellent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The phone reception at Mill Creek Campground isn\u2019t great. Image credit: NSW National Parks<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-e184456e gb-headline-text\">Which site to book<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mill Creek is a large campground with sites of varying sizes (and privacy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall the sites are a lot bigger than I had expected and you can fit 2 tents on each of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 30 campsites, 22 are designated for tent camping and 8 are for caravans or campervans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a large group camping area closer to the Mill Creek Picnic area. This is suitable for 15-70 people but you need to contact the area manager for bookings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sites 1-8<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites 1-8 are at the entrance of the campground and are designated for tents and caravans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is little privacy between the sites and as a result, they wouldn&#8217;t be my first choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the pros of these sites is that the parking area is less than 10 metres from them. Each is a big site but if you\u2019re only taking one of them, you\u2019ll share the fire pit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While they are closer to the road than other sites in this area, expect a constant flow of people walking past your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for 23 and 24 in terms of privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Camping-in-NSW-National-Parks-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"Camping in NSW National Parks\" class=\"wp-image-4978\" srcset=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Camping-in-NSW-National-Parks-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Camping-in-NSW-National-Parks-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Camping-in-NSW-National-Parks-768x548.jpg 768w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Camping-in-NSW-National-Parks.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campsites 23 is on the left and has a firepit, while site 24 is on the right (where the tent is) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Site 25: The best site at Mill Creek Campground<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only is it one of the biggest campsites, but you&#8217;re almost completely surrounded by dense eucalypt forests. It\u2019s a tough hike that takes 4 &#8211; 5 hours but the scenery is absolutely exquisite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hike starts from the Mill Creek Picnic area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can opt for the shorter 1.5 km Grass Tree Circuit. This is a cost you\u2019ll incur over and above your camping fees.
