You&#8217;re allowed to have open fires!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-157de807 gb-headline-text\">What to expect when camping at Flat Rock Campground<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves sounds good to you, then you\u2019ll love Flat Rock Tent Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s not in a national park, it isn\u2019t as crowded and commercialized as the other Ballina camping grounds and holiday parks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 87 well-maintained campsites to choose from. They\u2019re cleaned daily, and the hot showers are amazing!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a large camp kitchen with electric BBQ facilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open fires are permitted; you can rent firepits and buy wood from the kiosk at the entrance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flat Rock Tent Park is suitable for tents, camper vans, and camper trailers. I wanted to avoid being on top of other campers and preferred something that offered more privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I assumed the sites closest to the beach were the best (as they&#8217;re marked as <em>Premium<\/em>), but they were fully booked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In hindsight, I&#8217;m glad I didn&#8217;t book these <em>Premium <\/em>sites- and you&#8217;ll soon see why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-7f6f3450 gb-headline-text\">Sites 1-7<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites 1-7 are at the campground entrance and don\u2019t offer much privacy. They\u2019re a great size and nicely spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites 1 to 4 are for tent camping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-eb33a675 gb-headline-text\">Sites 8-11<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/best-campsites-at-Flat-Rock.jpg\" alt=\"best campsites at Flat Rock\" class=\"wp-image-5194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/best-campsites-at-Flat-Rock.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/best-campsites-at-Flat-Rock-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/best-campsites-at-Flat-Rock-768x548.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sites 8-11 are my favourites<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites 8-11 are the best sites at Flat Rock Tent Park (in my opinion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re perfect for couples or travellers who prefer more space as these sites are separated by large trees and offer more privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stayed on site 11, and while it\u2019s not as secluded as sites 8-10, it\u2019s a big site. The only catch is that sites 8-11 are the furthest from the beach access (but it\u2019s a short 80 m walk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-0491f4d0 gb-headline-text\">Site 12<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Site-12-at-Flat-Rock-campground.jpg\" alt=\"hidden campsite amongst trees\" class=\"wp-image-5198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Site-12-at-Flat-Rock-campground.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Site-12-at-Flat-Rock-campground-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Site-12-at-Flat-Rock-campground-768x548.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Site 12 is the most secluded site, but it&#8217;s not recommended for tent camping<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I had initially booked site 12 as it was listed as the most secluded and remote campsite at Flat Rock Campground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I didn\u2019t realize that site 12 is the only site not covered by grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hard, rough ground is better suited for camper vans. Luckily, site 11 was still available, so we opted for that site instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But yes, site 12 is a bit further from the other sites and is almost entirely surrounded by trees. But if you\u2019re tent camping, I wouldn\u2019t recommend it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-60095a2f gb-headline-text\">Site 13-33<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Flat-Rock-Tent-park-sites.jpg\" alt=\"Flat Rock Tent park sites\" class=\"wp-image-5197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Flat-Rock-Tent-park-sites.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Flat-Rock-Tent-park-sites-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Flat-Rock-Tent-park-sites-768x548.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sites 15-21 were rained out during my visit, but their location is great (when the sites aren&#8217;t flooded)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>13-22: <\/strong>These sites are relatively big and quiet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>24-33: <\/strong>They\u2019re close enough to the beach yet don\u2019t get as much foot traffic as some other sites. But they are close to one another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-f021659d gb-headline-text\">Sites 34 &#8211; 48 (Premium sites)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Where-to-camp-near-Byron-bay.jpg\" alt=\"Where to camp near Byron bay\" class=\"wp-image-5199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Where-to-camp-near-Byron-bay.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Where-to-camp-near-Byron-bay-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Where-to-camp-near-Byron-bay-768x548.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sites 34-43 are the premium sites<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These sites are closest to the beach, so you\u2019d assume they\u2019re the best. They\u2019re also more expensive than the other sites on the campground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But personally, I\u2019m glad I didn\u2019t book them. Location-wise, yes, they&#8217;re fantastic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But privacy-wise, no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re the smallest sites at Flat Rock, and there\u2019s not much space separating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re also the most popular sites and get booked out first. As a result, this campground section is often full, while the other side (sites 1-12) is empty. And that was exactly my experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there were lots of big groups and families who were camping on sites 34 to 48. If you&#8217;re booking a few sites for a group or want to mingle with other campers, this would be ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-e9e20dcc gb-headline-text\">Sites 49-54<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/camping-in-NSW.jpg\" alt=\"camping in NSW\" class=\"wp-image-5195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/camping-in-NSW.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/camping-in-NSW-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/camping-in-NSW-768x548.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sites 49 to 54 are right of the road<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites 49-54 are in the middle of the campground. They\u2019re close to the toilets and camp kitchen and get a lot of foot traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sites 55-60<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites 55-56 are close to the beach&#8217;s walkway, so they offer little privacy. As with sites 49-50, sites 58-60 are alongside the main road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-0a54bc83 gb-headline-text\">Sites 65-68<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re big sites but are right next to the kiosk and entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-11ca2dbb gb-headline-text\">Sites 69-87<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Flat-Rock-Campground-Ballina.jpg\" alt=\"Flat Rock Campground Ballina\" class=\"wp-image-5185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Flat-Rock-Campground-Ballina.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Flat-Rock-Campground-Ballina-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/australiaobsessed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Flat-Rock-Campground-Ballina-768x548.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sites 69-77 are closest to the amenities block<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>69-79: <\/strong>These are large sites close to the amenities block.
